I recently borrowed a dvd set of Cold Steel's knife fighting series. A
lot of it was a fucking informercial about how sweet their knives are,
and some demos of chopping up meat (including carving a turkey).

I'm curious if anyone else has seen the seires, and what comments they
might have.

After the bashing I took from most of you fuckers regarding knife
defence and REAL violence, I thought I'd have a look at some of the
systems out there. Any suggestions? I know the Dog bros are supposed to
be the gold standard for this sort of thing: any others?

Big surprise there.

I haven't seen their knife series. I saw a brief bit of Sabre & Cutlass
at the end of one of their Proof DVD's that was good. DeLongis
(http://www.delongis.com/) was the instructor for it and he's pretty good
from everything I've ever heard. As far as their knife stuff, I know some
Silat guys that aren't all that impressed, but then again, it's hard to
impress Silat guys. ;-)

IIRC, that was in rec.martial-arts and not rec.martial-arts.moderated

Dog Brothers are really good for stick work (many might contest the "Gold
Standard" but few that they've earned their props). Haven't heard whole
bunches about their knife stuff.

In your shoes, I'd try an FMA school. Kali, Arnis, Escrima... Also, of
course, Silat. If you can find it (which is the trick), a decent western
knife method would not be a bad idea either.

Peace favor your sword (IH),

You are interested in systems/methods for defense against knife attacks?
Or for fighting with a knife?

Either way, take a look at Krav-Maga / Haganah
It is derived from the system used by the Israeli military (including the
Israeli Special Ops) :

http://www.krav-maga.com/
...

Although i don't have any direct experience with it, i have heard good
things about Systema. It is based on the system taught to Soviet/Russian
Special Ops.

Many "traditional" marital arts, Aikido for instance, have their own
methods of knife defense, but most consider them to be advanced
techniques. A student must first spend time, often a year or two, or
more, learning unarmed defense and attacks before they will be taught any
defense against armed attacks. This is changing in some schools.

Yep, that is pretty much it. A real waste.

Dog Brothers the gold standard for blade offense/defense?!? No.
They focus primarily on stick fighting. Not the same. For blade look for
Pekiti-Tirsia or Doce Pares (blade, not stick) or Inayan (knife) or
Kalis Ilustrisimo, even some silat systems are ok.
